25 Aug Extending Your Home's Exterior, Part I

Homeowners will often ask us, “What do you think is the best way to make the most of my home’s exterior?” Licensed general contractor and Universal Roof and RbA Director of Sales, Jim Sellers, has the answer!
“Proper maintenance will increase the longevity of any home’s exterior and greatly improve aesthetics. Homeowners should keep a good quality paint on their exterior and keep it clean, repainting when needed (usually about every 5-8 years). This is easily forgotten or overlooked, but it makes such a difference. Some of the higher quality paints will not only make the house look a lot better, but they will extend the life of your siding products or stucco.
Stucco is very common in Florida, and absolutely has to be painted – as does any porous concrete or cementitious material. Paint acts as a sealant and helps prevent water intrusion.
In recent years, people are rediscovering that siding is a better product than stucco. I’m a big fan of James Hardie® – a cement fiber product which captures that traditional look with a wood-grain or smooth finish. Hardie® has longevity and doesn’t require the maintenance that other traditional wood sidings do. Hardie® siding can come primed so you can customize it by painting yourself, or save on maintenance and go with their ColorPlus®, pre-colored siding which is warrantied for 15 years.”
